About Youth Academy (U7-U8)The South Windsor Soccer Club is dedicated to providing all children of South Windsor a place to play soccer. The South Windsor Soccer Club Youth Academy is for kids from Under-6 through Under-8 (U6-U8). Our primary focus is on player development, having fun, and providing a safe environment. The children at the U6, U7 and U8 are the base of the entire club and we are looking to provide them with a great experience as they grow.

What to expect
- The structure of a 1 hour training will be as follows for U7 and U8:
- Play phase- as the kids show up they will be put in small groups playing 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 to goals. Limited coaching and allowing the kids to run around and have fun trying to score. Limit stoppages to talk will really allow them just to get moving. There will be two actual groups between 10-15 kids. So the volunteer coaches will be split up to two areas setting up 2-4 small fields in their space. Total time will be 10 minutes allowed to play.
- Technical phase- the kids will stay in their 2 groups getting a quick drink in between the play phase and technical. The coaches will have set up 2 different drills while the players were playing. Drills should be an individual skill drill or a passing/ receiving drill. Each group will do both drills for about 7-8 minutes then switch, totaling about 15 minutes. Purpose is to get the kids individual touches and for the coaches to learn techniques and what to teach.
- Game learning phase- this phase should start about the 30 minute mark to make sure we stay on time. The kids still in their initial small groups will work in a game type scenario that would change weekly. This area would focus on breaking down the game into small game realistic situations. These will get more difficult or involve more content as they go through the program. Starting with a lot of 1v1 learning how to take on players with ball control or how to defend. Increasing to working in a full half field on passing and building out of the back, how to spread out on offense and attacking the goal as examples. This phase will last about 20 minutes.
- Play Phase- every training the kids will get to play for the last 10 minutes of training. This should involve larger numbers of players playing 3v3 or 4v4 to goal. As close to a real game as possible. Don’t be afraid to stop them to reaffirm what was taught in practice that day.
Player Development
U6 Player Development
The U6 part of the program involves kids just getting into soccer. The goal is to expand on the U4 program and give them a taste of what a soccer game is like. This age will have one session per week involving part-practice and part-game where it’s all about having fun. We’ll be working mostly on fine motor skills and coordination. The ultimate goal at this age is to have fun by keeping the child engaged and having fun, getting them to crave more
U7 and U8 Player Development-
Typically a U8 player that starts at age 6 will have 4 seasons (A fall and spring season at U7 and the same at U8) of play before he/she moves up to U9. Our goal is to develop their basic skills so they are prepared to move up to the next level. This academy will help them progress as players over the 4 seasons with each season building on the last. We can't expect these young players to master everything below in a single season, but taught consistently from season to season, they will get it over time. Keep this in mind as you read through this document. There will be times that new players will come in new to soccer at different times during this Academy. We will help them transition into the Academy by grouping them with others at their ability.
