Girls Grow Here is a South Windsor Soccer Club Recreation initiative focused on helping more girls find...and stay connected to...the kind of team experience that can shape them far beyond the field.

This is about more than soccer.

It is about giving girls a place to belong, make friends, build confidence, learn the game, and experience what it feels like to be part of a team that supports them.

Some girls sign up because they already love soccer. Some sign up because a friend is playing. Some are brand new and just looking for something active, social, and positive to try.
Picture
They do not all arrive for the same reason.

But once they are here, soccer can give them something powerful: teammates who know them, coaches who encourage them, a place to use their voice, and a team experience that helps them grow on and off the field.

That is what Girls Grow Here is about. Creating a team experience that gives more girls a reason to start, a reason to stay, and a place to grow.

The Challenges Facing Girls in Youth Sports

Women’s sports are gaining long-overdue visibility. More people are watching. More girls are seeing women compete, lead, and succeed. But at the youth level, girls are still missing too many chances to play...and too many are stepping away from sports too early.
Picture
The numbers show why this matters:
  • The Women’s Sports Foundation reports that girls have more than 1.3 million fewer opportunities to play high school sports than boys.

  • The U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Count Her In playbook cites research showing that 38% of girls do not participate in sports, compared with 25% of boys.

  • The same playbook notes that among children ages 6–12, only 30% of girls play sports regularly, compared with 49% of boys.

  • By age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at twice the rate of boys, according to research cited by the U.S. Soccer Foundation.
  • As girls get older, social pressure, body image concerns, fear of judgment, lack of confidence, and not feeling like they belong can all affect whether they start — or stay in — sports.

  • Women in Sport found that 43% of teenage girls who once considered themselves “sporty” disengage from sport after primary school. Among that group, 68% said fear of feeling judged was a barrier, 61% cited lack of confidence, and 73% said they do not like others watching them take part in activity.

The numbers point to a simple reality: girls are less likely to participate, more likely to step away, and more likely to face pressures that make sports feel harder to stay connected to.

If we want more girls to stay in the game, we have to be intentional about creating the kind of experience that makes them feel welcome, supported, and connected.

Why Team Sports Matter for Girls

When girls have a positive sports experience, the benefits can reach far beyond the field. Team sports can help girls build confidence, friendships, communication skills, resilience, healthy habits, and a stronger sense of belonging. The data makes that clear.

  • The Women’s Sports Foundation reports that rates of mental health disorders are 1.5 to 2.5 times lower for girls who play sports compared with girls who have never played.

  • In the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Teen Sport in America report, girls who played at least one sport reported higher self-esteem, higher self-efficacy, higher social support, less loneliness, less self-derogation, and lower levels of depression than girls who did not participate in sports.

  • The same report found that girls who played soccer were among the groups with higher self-esteem and social support, along with lower rates of self-derogation and depression.

  • A Girls & Sports Impact Report from Ruling Our eXperiences found that high school girls who play sports are significantly more likely to have supportive friends, get along well with other girls, trust other girls, and have healthy ways to handle stressful situations.

  • That same report found that girls who play sports report stronger relationships with other girls and lower levels of sadness and depression.

  • The report also found that female athletes are 11% more likely to say they are happy the way they are and 16% less likely to want to change their appearance.

  • The Women’s Sports Foundation’s Play to Lead research found that women who played youth sports most often pointed to teamwork as their biggest takeaway, with 73% naming teamwork, 52.6% naming learning from mistakes, and 50.9% naming handling pressure.

That is why a strong team experience is so important.  The goal is not to turn every girl into an elite athlete. The goal is to make sure more girls have access to the confidence, friendships, support, and sense of belonging that sports can provide.

For some girls, soccer may become a passion. For others, it may simply become a place where they feel connected, encouraged, and proud to keep showing up. Both matter.

3 Ways to Help "Girls Grow Here"

Girls Grow Here is about creating more opportunities for girls to experience the confidence, friendship, belonging, and growth that can come from being part of a team. Here’s how you can help.

1. Register for Fall 2026
If your player is ready for a team experience that is welcoming, supportive, and built around more than the game, we would love to have them join us. Players do not need to be experienced to belong here...they just need a place to start.

Click "FIND YOUR SOCCER PROGRAM" below to see which programs we offer and which is best for your player.

2. Invite a Friend
Many girls try something new because a friend asked them to. If you know a girl who could use a team, a place to belong, or a little more confidence... send her family this page and invite her to join.

Sometimes one invitation is all it takes.

"Hey! South Windsor Soccer has a new "Girls Grow Here" initiative to get more girls involved in team sports. The focus is more than soccer...it’s about helping girls find a place to belong, make friends, build confidence, and experience being part of a team. I thought of your family and wanted to pass it along in case you want to check it out: https://www.southwindsorsoccer.org/girlsgrow.html"

3. Coach or Recommend a Coach
The right coach can make all the difference in whether a girl feels confident, connected, and excited to come back.

We are looking for positive, encouraging adults who care about helping girls feel supported, challenged, and proud to be part of a team. Soccer experience is helpful, but the most important thing is the ability to connect with players and create an environment where they feel seen, valued, and cared for.

If that sounds like you, we would love to have you coach with us.

If someone else comes to mind...a former player, teacher, college student, neighbor, family friend, or positive role model...please recommend them. They do not need to be a parent of a player or a soccer expert to make a meaningful impact.
