The Heart of Rec: The Coaches
South Windsor Soccer Club’s recreation program is only possible because of our volunteer coaches. Every practice, every game, and every positive team experience depends on adults who are willing to give their time to support kids.
Being a rec coach is an important responsibility, but it is also one of the most rewarding ways to be involved. Coaches help players build confidence, learn the game, be part of a team, and develop a love for soccer that can last well beyond a single season.
Whether you are an experienced soccer coach or someone volunteering for the first time, we are grateful you are here. If you are reliable, positive, patient, and willing to support kids in their development, you can make a real impact.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
You do not need to be an expert soccer coach to volunteer. Soccer knowledge or playing experience is helpful. Coaching experience, whether in soccer or another sport, is also helpful. But neither is required. The most important qualities are reliability, patience, positivity, and a willingness to support kids as they learn and grow. If you are willing to be involved, we would be happy to have you join us.

The typical rec coaching commitment includes:
- Preseason Coaches Meeting: All coaches attend one required meeting before the season begins. This meeting covers important program information, coaching expectations, and helpful training to prepare coaches for a successful season.
- Weekly Team Practice: Each team has one regular practice per week. Coaches plan and lead this practice with support from SWSC resources and staff.
- Weekly Game: Each team typically has one game per week. Coaches manage substitutions, equal playing time, sportsmanship, and the overall team environment.
- Optional Weekly Training Session: In addition to regular weekly practice, each team is assigned one optional training session per week. These sessions are led by SWSC club trainers and give players extra opportunities to build skills and get more touches on the ball. Coaches are not required to attend, but we strongly encourage attendance when possible. It is a great way to support your players, learn from club trainers, and spend additional time with your team.
- Planning & Communication: Coaches should expect some weekly time for practice planning and family communication.

- Player Development: Plan practices and manage games in a way that helps players learn, grow, and build confidence. Practices should be active, age-appropriate, and focused on helping players better understand the game.
- Fairness & Inclusion: Make sure every player has a meaningful role on the team. This includes equal playing time, opportunities to experience multiple positions, and support for players of all skill and confidence levels.
- Game Management: Manage games in a way that reflects the values of the rec program. Coaches should encourage decision-making, avoid over-coaching from the sideline, and take appropriate steps to keep uneven games positive and developmental.
