SWSC Recreational Soccer is a team-centered soccer experience for players ages 8 through 18. Players are placed on one team for the entire season. Each team has one practice each week, one optional weekly training session, and one Saturday game against another team. Players of all experience levels are welcome, whether they are brand new to soccer or have played for years.
Rec is built around belonging, fairness, growth, and fun. Players learn the game, try new things, make mistakes, build confidence, and contribute to a team in a setting that is supportive and active. It gives families a competitive soccer experience with less intensity and a lower time commitment than travel soccer.
Our goal is simple: to help every player feel like they belong, find joy in the game, improve at their own pace, and want to keep coming back season after season.

U10 Rec is open to both new and returning players. Some players may have years of soccer experience, while others may be joining a team for the first time. The goal is to help every player learn the game, feel included, and grow at their own pace.
U10 is often a player’s first experience in a true team setting. Players are still building their individual skills, but they are also learning how to play with teammates and understand the game around them. In 7v7, players begin to see how their decisions, movement, spacing, and effort affect the whole team. At this age, the game starts to feel more like soccer. Players learn the basics of attacking, defending, and reacting when possession changes. They also begin learning important rules and game concepts, including positions, spacing, throw-ins, goal kicks, and offsides.
U10 teams are separated by boys and girls divisions. Players are not locked into one position. All players should expect to experience multiple positions throughout the season as they continue learning the game. Games typically have one referee, and game scores and standings are not recorded.
TEAM FORMATION
Teams are created after registration closes. During registration, families can request teammates and list any nights their player cannot practice. We do our best to honor requests and keep returning players with past teammates or coaches when possible, but requests are not guaranteed.
Teams also need to be balanced by skill, experience, roster size, and coach availability. Sometimes that means players may not be placed with every requested teammate. Team assignments are typically posted 2 to 3 weeks before the season starts.
TEAM PRACTICE
Each U10 team has one required team practice per week.
Practice length: 75 minutes
Practice night: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. We generally try to avoid Friday practices.
Fall practice times: 5:15 to 6:30 PM
Spring practice times: 5:15 to 6:30 PM or 6:30 to 7:45 PM
Practice locations: Rye Street Park, Nevers Park, or Pleasant Valley Elementary School
Practices are led by the team’s volunteer coaches and may sometimes include support from a club trainer. Practice schedules are typically posted 2 to 3 weeks before the season starts.
We know families would like to have practice schedules sooner, and we would like to provide them sooner. However, practice schedules depend on several moving parts, including final registration numbers, team formation, coach availability, and field space. We appreciate your patience!
OPTIONAL TRAINING SESSION
In addition to their regular team practice, U10 players are assigned one optional training session each week. These sessions are included at no additional cost and are strongly encouraged, but not required.
We offer this extra session to give players more touches on the ball, more time learning the game, and another chance to build confidence with teammates. Sessions are led by SWSC club trainers and planned specifically for the player’s age group. Team coaches may attend, but the session is led by the trainer.
How it works:
- No separate registration is required
- Players attend when they are able
- Players train with teammates and other players from the same division
- Rec and travel players are not mixed
- Boys and girls divisions remain separate
Training sessions focus on a mix of technical skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and ball control, and game concepts such as spacing, support, defending, and decision-making.
Session length: 75 minutes
Session night: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday
Fall session times: 5:15 to 6:30 PM
Spring session times: 5:15 to 6:30 PM or 6:30 to 7:45 PM
Locations: Rye Street Park, Nevers Park, or Pleasant Valley Elementary School
Each team is assigned a consistent night so players can train in a familiar, organized setting with players from their own age group. Optional training night schedules are typically posted 1 to 2 weeks before the season starts.
GAMES
Each U10 team plays one game per week.
Game length: 4 12-minute quarters
Game day: Saturday
Game times: Typically between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM
Game locations: Rye Street Park, Nevers Park, or Pleasant Valley Elementary School, unless traveling
Referee: U10 games typically have one referee
At U10, games are usually in-house, which means South Windsor teams play against other South Windsor teams in the same age division. If there are not enough teams to create a meaningful schedule, SWSC may work with nearby towns to schedule some home and away games. If that happens, families will be informed before the season begins.
Game scores and standings are not recorded. All U10 players must receive equal playing time. Playing time cannot be reduced based on skill, experience, or as a punishment. Players are not locked into one position and should have the opportunity to experience multiple positions throughout the season. For more information, please visit our Coaching Standards page.
Jewelry is not allowed during games or practices. This includes bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Earrings must be removed. Players are not allowed to tape over earrings.
UNIFORMS & GEAR
All fall recreational registrations include a uniform: jersey, shorts, and socks. Uniforms will be handed out at the first practice. In the spring season, uniforms are provided for players who did not play during the previous fall season. Returning players use their fall uniform.
Families should provide:
- Soccer cleats
- Shin guards
- Size 4 soccer ball
- Water bottle
Players: 9v9
Age/Grade: Ages 10 to 11, usually grades 5 to 6
Team Practice: 1 per week
Optional Training Session: 1 per week

U12 Rec is open to both new and returning players. Some players have played for years, while others may be joining a team for the first time. Coaches help players learn at their own pace while becoming more comfortable in a larger, more organized game.
In 9v9, players begin learning how to play a role within the team. The field is bigger, there are more teammates and opponents, and players start making decisions beyond just the ball. They learn how to support teammates in different areas of the field, understand basic team shape, and recognize how their choices affect the team.
U12 also adds a fun next step: home and away games against nearby towns. Teams will still play a few games against other South Windsor U12 teams, but most games will be against teams from other towns. This gives players a chance to experience new opponents while still playing in a recreational setting.

U12 includes both in-town and nearby-town games. Teams usually play 2 to 3 games against other South Windsor U12 teams and the remaining games against teams from other towns. Families should expect some local travel during the season. About half of the games are typically home games and about half are away games. For away games, the home team’s soccer club decides the game time and location. While most games are in the morning, some games may be scheduled in the afternoon.
